Rynek, Tychy
The market square in Tychy is an intimate plaza in the town centre, clearly set back from the main busy streets. Thanks to its greenery and calm surroundings it feels more like a town green than a typical Silesian trading square. Tychy is associated above all with post-war housing, yet the square belongs to the older, historic part of the town.
The centrepiece is a fountain with sculptures of three otters — a reference to the ponds that until recently surrounded the site and whose owners complained about stolen fish. The frontages consist of historic tenement houses erected on the former pond grounds; they house, among others, the Municipal Museum and the Tychy brewery.
The oldest building around the square is the church of St Mary Magdalene from the 18th century. The square remains a meeting place for residents and a backdrop for festivals, fairs and concerts; outside event dates it is simply a quiet spot for a short break on the road.
