Plac Grunwaldzki, Gniew
The market square in Gniew, today called Plac Grunwaldzki, is the protected historic centre of this small Pomeranian town above the Vistula. It has kept its medieval layout, with buildings enclosing a square plot, and its intimate scale means a visit takes only a quarter of an hour.
In the middle stands a Gothic town hall built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and still the seat of the town authorities; its present appearance comes from a 20th-century reconstruction. The surrounding townhouses are several centuries old, with the earliest details going back to the 14th century. The painter Leon Wyczółkowski once lived in one of them; another houses a bakery with a preserved historic interior.
The square hosts town events, concerts and fairs. From here it is a few minutes' walk to the Teutonic castle in Gniew, one of the largest strongholds in Pomerania, and to the monument of Miś Maciuś, a local figure referring to the battle of Gniew in 1626.
