Rynek, Dzierżoniów
The market square in Dzierżoniów is one of the larger municipal plazas in this part of Lower Silesia. It is surrounded by dense, carefully restored buildings and has kept a legible historic layout. The square is a convenient base for exploring the town at the foot of the Owl Mountains.
The middle of the square is taken up by an imposing town hall of medieval origin — its beginnings go back to the 13th century, while its present form comes from a 19th-century renovation. The Gothic tower survives from the older building and rises above the surrounding roofs. Today the town hall houses the municipal authorities and a library.
Among the tenement houses the home of Melchior Kellner stands out, and the façades in the frontages are mostly Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance. A Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk stands on the square, benches are set around it, and the tourist information centre operates in the house at number 1.
