Rynek, Niemcza
The market square in Niemcza is an elongated, rectangular plaza in the centre of a small town in the Dzierżoniów district of Lower Silesia. Its shape resembles a wide street rather than a classic quadrangle, which sets it apart from typical Silesian squares. Niemcza is one of the oldest settlements in the region, and the compact frontages form an intimate space that can be walked around in a quarter of an hour.
The frontages are filled with colourful townhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the western side holds a Neo-Romanesque town hall built between 1853 and 1862. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a tower some 60 metres high, rises above the square. A few steps away stand preserved sections of the medieval defensive walls with their town gates, among the best kept of their kind in the area.
A large part of the square serves as a car park, so vehicle traffic is noticeable. The square pairs well with a walk along the walls, and in summer it comes alive during town events, including the annual Niemcza Days.
