Rynek, Brzeg
The town hall stands in the middle of the market square in Brzeg, a town on the Oder in the Opole region. It is regarded as one of the most valuable Renaissance monuments in Poland — built in the 16th century, it has survived almost unchanged, which is exceptional on a national scale. The building was raised on a horseshoe-like plan with an inner courtyard.
The western elevation makes the strongest impression, with two towers crowned by cupolas and lanterns. The stone detail — portals, window surrounds and loggias — reveals the hand of Italian builders working in Silesia. Inside, representative halls with rich ceilings and vaults have been preserved and are still used for official ceremonies.
The building remains the seat of the municipal authorities and other institutions, so it is mostly viewed from the outside, and walking around the town hall and the square takes half an hour. Combine the visit with the castle of the Silesian Piasts, called the Silesian Wawel, and the nearby church of St Nicholas.
