Stary Rynek 1, Częstochowa
The Old Town Hall in Częstochowa is a branch of the Częstochowa Museum arranged below the surface of the Old Market Square, on the site of the former town hall. The building stood here until the early 18th century and was never rebuilt; its remains came to light only in recent times. The site holds the status of an archaeological and architectural reserve.
The cellar walls were revealed by chance: in 2006 a delivery vehicle working on the construction of an ice rink damaged the pavement and exposed the old foundations. The archaeological research that followed made it possible to secure the find and open it to visitors as an underground route.
The display includes an archaeological exhibition of finds recovered during the excavations, along with reconstructions of the town hall interiors: the cellars, the lock-up and the tavern. A separate section is devoted to the „History of Częstochowa” exhibition. A visit takes under an hour and takes place indoors, whatever the weather.
