Rynek, Jasło
The market square is the heart of Jasło, a town at the meeting of the Wisłoka, Ropa and Jasiołka rivers on the edge of the Carpathian Foothills. Jasło was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, and its buildings — including the square's frontages — were raised anew after the war. Today the square serves as the town's main public space.
The illuminated fountain with programmed jets of water, known as the dancing fountain, draws the eye. A pedestrian promenade with eateries and summer gardens runs along the southern side, while a figure of St John of Nepomuk stands by the town hall to the east. A few steps away rises the collegiate church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the oldest church in town.
The square is the stage for civic ceremonies and open-air events; the best known are the International Wine Days, which refer to the winemaking traditions of the Jasło region. Outside event dates it is a calm place for a short break and a coffee, and a walk around the old town takes about half an hour.
