A square above the Vistula valley

The Large Market Square lies in the newer part of Świecie, a town in the Kociewie region moved onto the plateau after repeated floods in the fork of the Vistula and the Wda. It is the main square of the town and a convenient starting point for exploring the area. Most of the surrounding buildings date from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

A town hall like a castle

The most distinctive building is the neo-Gothic town hall styled as a stronghold: battlements, corner turrets and brick facing make it look like a small castle from a distance. Today it houses the registry office, among others. Around it stand imposing tenement houses — from neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance to Art Nouveau — evidence of the town's prosperity after the relocation.

The surroundings

A quarter of an hour on foot, right by the Wda, stands a real castle: the Teutonic stronghold with a preserved cylindrical tower open to climb. On the way you pass the ruins of the Gothic parish church. The square itself takes fifteen minutes, but combined with the castle and the Vistula valley Świecie fills half a day.
