Rynek, Ciężkowice
The market square in Ciężkowice is a small yet exceptionally well preserved plaza in the centre of the town on the Biała river, in Tarnów county. It has kept its original layout, and its frontages are filled with arcaded houses. For travellers it is a natural stop when visiting the nearby Skamieniałe Miasto (Petrified Town) nature reserve.
The square is lined with historic arcaded townhouses, most of them from the 18th century. Their construction is the curiosity here — some of the buildings are wooden or only partly built of brick, which is a rarity in Polish towns. They burned down repeatedly and suffered during wartime, yet each time they were rebuilt. Today they belong to the Wooden Architecture Trail.
The northern frontage holds the town hall from the end of the 19th century, crowned after refurbishment with an elegant turret. It houses a culture centre, with a themed inn in the cellars. Benches on the square make it easy to rest before moving on. On Wednesdays the plaza returns to its old role and turns into a market.
