The Old Town Promenade is a belt of greenery encircling the historic centre of Wrocław along the former City Moat, with a short stretch by the Oder. It was created at the beginning of the 19th century after the city fortifications were dismantled — one of the first schemes of its kind in Europe, handed over to residents as a public park for walking.
The ramparts left rises that are still readable in the terrain: the former bastions were turned into viewing hills, among them Wzgórze Polskie and Wzgórze Partyzantów. Paths lead along the water past old trees, fountains and monuments. An educational trail with more than a dozen stops runs along the whole length.
The route links the key addresses of the centre: the Wrocław Puppet Theatre, the Racławice Panorama, the Dominikańska Gallery and the opera house. Walking the whole promenade takes about an hour, and it is often the most pleasant way across the centre — free of car traffic, shaded by trees and lined with benches.
