pl. Wolności, Lubawka
The market square in Lubawka, today named Plac Wolności (Freedom Square), is a small but atmospheric plaza in the centre of a town lying between the Karkonosze and the Kruche Mountains, on an old trade route towards Bohemia. Its layout has not changed since the town was founded, so it has kept its original proportions and compact frontages.
In the middle of the square stands the 18th-century town hall with a tower. Earlier municipal buildings were consumed by the fires that struck Lubawka time and again. Around it stretch arcaded townhouses — the oldest, at number 6, dates from the 17th century, its neighbours at numbers 2, 9 and 11 from the following one. The arcades form a distinctive shaded walkway around the whole plaza.
The town struggled not only with fire but also with floodwater. A reminder is the coat of arms above the town hall entrance, referring to one of the floods, and the figure of Saint John of Nepomuk in a corner of the square — a patron invoked against the elements. The plaza makes a good starting point for trips into the surrounding hills.
