John Paul II Square lies in the centre of Ełk, next to the park and Lake Ełckie. Before 1999 it was the main venue for municipal rallies and parades. It was renamed after the mass celebrated here by Pope John Paul II, which drew a record number of the faithful in the town's history.
The focal point of the square is the monument to John Paul II, with the papal coat of arms set into the pavement. A fountain, an amphitheatre and a cycle path complete the surroundings. Open-air exhibitions are held here, including photographs from the papal visit. The papal trails Ełk–Wigry and Wigry–Studzieniczna start from this spot.
The square is a natural starting point for exploring Ełk and for a walk along the lake. The space is flat and paved, accessible for pushchairs, and there is a car park nearby. Admission is free and the place can be visited in any season.
