The showpiece avenue of Częstochowa

Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny is the main axis of Częstochowa and at the same time the city's drawing room. Strictly speaking it consists of three sections — Avenues I, II and III — linking the old and the new parts of the city, running from Staszic Park and 3 May Park towards the church of Saint Sigismund. The route is a natural continuation of the way to the Jasna Góra monastery.

Architecture

Along the avenue stand imposing townhouses and villas from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, built during the city's rapid industrial growth. Many of them belonged to wealthy Częstochowa factory owners, which shows in the scale of the facades and the richness of the detail. The ground floors are now occupied by shops, cafés and restaurants.

Walking and street furniture

The avenue is planted with trees and fitted with benches, including commemorative ones dedicated to figures connected with the city. Sculptures, fountains and monuments are spread along its whole length. It makes a comfortable, shaded walking route right in the centre, offering a break from the bustle of the streets.
