ul. 1 Maja, Kowary
The old town of Kowary is the main municipal square, stretching along 1 Maja street and serving today as a pedestrian promenade. The town lies at the foot of the Karkonosze mountains, so the old town is a natural stop during trips into the hills — towards the Okraj Pass or Karpacz.
The square is surrounded by colourful townhouses, mostly from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, among which several older ones from the 16th and 17th centuries have survived. The dominant building is the town hall from the late 18th century, valued for its elaborate architectural detail and regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the region. Beside it rises a church with a tower topped by a sheet-metal helm.
Near the town hall works the Centre of Integration and Town Tradition, with an exhibition on the history of Kowary and numerous artefacts. The old town also hosts the Hall of Fame of Polish Cycling, commemorating well-known Polish riders. Benches and places to eat line the promenade.
