Plac Józefa Piłsudskiego lies in Warsaw's Śródmieście district, a few steps from the Saxon Garden and Krakowskie Przedmieście. Before the Second World War it served as the courtyard of the Saxon Palace, which stood here. The square changed its name several times and has carried the present one since 2012.
Its focal point is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, set in the three surviving arcades of the Saxon Palace — the only remains of the destroyed building. The Polish Army keeps a guard of honour here and the changing of the guard draws onlookers. Nearby stands the monument to the square's patron, one of three statues of the Marshal in Warsaw.
The square hosts state ceremonies and parades broadcast on television. Reconstruction of the Saxon Palace is under way, so parts of the space may be fenced off. Half an hour is enough to look around, and the Saxon Garden with its fountain and avenues begins right next door.
