The Westerplatte and Second World War Museum stands in Gdańsk near the historic centre and the bank of the Motława. Its modern building is one of the city's most recognisable structures, and its form deliberately contrasts with the architecture of the old town.
The display covers more than five thousand square metres and is placed underground, more than a dozen metres below street level. The narrative is divided into three blocks and eighteen thematic sections — from the causes of the war, through its course, to the fate of civilians and the post-war consequences. Alongside the exhibits there are multimedia screens, film material and archive photographs.
The museum runs lessons, workshops and educational walks, mainly for young people; parts of the exhibition are demanding for the youngest visitors. The same institution also runs a branch on Westerplatte, at the site of the fighting of September 1939.
