Fosa Staromiejska 1A, Toruń
Cosmopolis is a multimedia fountain on the Lucjan Broniewicz university square, a few steps from the old town of Toruń. Its form refers to Nicolaus Copernicus and the heliocentric theory — the layout of basins and nozzles echoes the planets orbiting the Sun. The installation brings together water, light and sound, creating an open-air stage in the very centre of the city.
For the opening, Krzesimir Dębski composed a piece entitled “Cosmopolis”, which gave the whole installation its name. Over time the repertoire grew to include shows built on the film music of Wojciech Kilar and on the soundtrack of the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Performances run from April to October after dusk; the detailed schedule is published by the organiser.
The site is public and level, and works well as a break during a tour of the UNESCO-listed Old Town. During the day the fountain functions as an ordinary urban water feature.
