Pl. św. Jana Pawła II 2-3, Świdnica
The cathedral dedicated to St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr and St Wenceslaus stands on John Paul II Square in the centre of Świdnica. The parish goes back to the thirteenth century, when a wooden church stood here; the present building is the result of successive rebuildings and shows a Gothic façade with a tall tower dominating the town. For years the church belonged to the Jesuits, who gave it its rich Baroque furnishings.
The interior is among the most lavishly appointed in the region. Attention is drawn by the unusual high altar laid out on a circular plan, the row of side chapels with altars and sculptures, and the crypt with a palm vault resting on a central pillar — the Jesuits arranged the Holy Sepulchre there each year. In 2018 the cathedral was declared a Monument of History.
The church can be seen individually or in groups, outside service hours. It is worth checking the rules of entry and booking with the site manager before arriving.
