Wieś Tum
The Archicollegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Alexius in Tum near Łęczyca is one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Poland. Its stone, twin-towered body with apses rises straight from the flat valley of the Bzura. The site is also linked with the tradition of one of the oldest Benedictine abbeys in the country.
The church was built in the 12th century and rebuilt many times. It suffered in fires and during the Swedish invasion, and the damage of the Second World War forced a thorough reconstruction. Archaeological work in the 1940s uncovered the old foundations and made it possible to restore the Romanesque and Gothic forms of the building.
The collegiate church holds the status of a Historic Monument and lies on the Romanesque Route. Next to it stands the wooden church of St Nicholas from 1761, and an early medieval stronghold is nearby. Visiting the interior is ticketed and takes place at set hours, worth checking before arrival.
