ul. Kościelna 42, Wieś Dębno
The parish church of St Michael the Archangel in Dębno Podhalańskie is one of the most valuable wooden churches in Poland, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with a group of other churches in Lesser Poland. The Gothic log structure has survived in exceptionally good condition, and the modest body with its tower and shingled roof stands amid an old churchyard cemetery.
Its greatest treasure is the polychrome painting from the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, applied directly to the wood and regarded as the oldest of its kind preserved in Europe. Besides that, an early Gothic panel painting, a historic tabernacle and a late Gothic figure of St Nicholas draw the eye. The cramped, dimly lit interior heightens the sense of contact with original medieval fabric.
This remains a working parish church — visits take place outside services, so it is worth checking the mass schedule in advance. The church lies on the Wooden Architecture Route and the Gothic Route, between Nowy Targ and Lake Czorsztyn.
