The Passion and Marian sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska lies on the hills of the Beskid Mały range in Wadowice county, about 30 km south-west of Cracow. The Bernardine monastery and the church of Our Lady of the Angels were founded in the 17th century by Mikołaj Zebrzydowski. The place was linked with Karol Wojtyła from childhood, hence the popular name Papal Calvary.
The heart of the sanctuary is the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Kalwaria in the monastery church. Around it, on wooded slopes, spreads a pilgrimage park with several dozen chapels and small churches set along the Paths of the Lord's Passion and the Paths of Our Lady. The path devotions lead through 28 stations and walking the whole route takes several hours.
The monastery complex together with the pilgrimage park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 and holds the status of a Historic Monument of Poland. The busiest times are Holy Week and the August feast of the Assumption. Visiting the church itself is quick, walking the paths takes a full day.
