The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa is a Pauline monastery complex towering over the centre of Częstochowa: the basilica, the Chapel of the Miraculous Icon, the convent buildings and the bastion fortifications around them. It is the most important Marian shrine in Poland, visited by millions of pilgrims each year.
The heart of the sanctuary is the chapel with the icon of Our Lady, unveiled during a ceremony accompanied by fanfares. Next to it stands the basilica with a richly decorated Baroque interior. It is worth extending the visit to the treasury, the 600th Anniversary Museum, the Knights' Hall and the bastions of St Roch and St Barbara. The tower offers two terraces with a panorama of the city.
The grounds are extensive, so a calm visit needs at least two hours. A park with avenues and rosary stations surrounds the walls, handy for a rest between services. Dress and conduct suited to a place of worship are expected, and crowds peak in summer and on feast days.
