The Lutheran Church of Peace of the Holy Trinity stands on Peace Square in Świdnica, a few minutes' walk from the market square. It was built in the mid-17th century, after the Peace of Westphalia, when Silesian Protestants were allowed to raise a church only of wood, clay and straw and only outside the town walls. The result is the largest wooden Baroque church in Europe.
The half-timbered structure makes the building look more like a manor house than a church. Inside, the richness is a surprise: four tiers of galleries, a Baroque pulpit, a main altar with a relief of the Last Supper and a historic organ. The gallery balustrades carry dozens of biblical quotations and allegorical scenes, while the ceilings are painted with scenes from the Book of Revelation.
Together with its twin church in Jawor it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is a Historic Monument of Poland. On the church grounds it is worth seeing the Bell Ringer's House with an exhibition on Silesian Lutheranism and the old cemetery. This is still a working parish church, so visits take place outside services.
