Sandomierz
The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands on the escarpment of the old town of Sandomierz, a few steps from the castle and the Opatów Gate. Founded as a collegiate church in the second half of the 14th century by Casimir the Great, it was rebuilt many times over the centuries.
The Gothic body hides Baroque and Rococo furnishings: elaborate altars, stalls and the historic organ front. The greatest curiosity are the Byzantine-Ruthenian paintings in the chancel, a rare ensemble of this kind in Poland. The Baroque facade gives the building a character quite unlike its medieval interior.
The church is open outside service hours, while tours of the crypts and evening visits are arranged separately. Audio guides are available. The cathedral is listed as a Historic Monument, and the visit combines easily with a walk around the old town.
