Święty Krzyż 1, Nowa Słupia
The monastery on Święty Krzyż, on the summit of Łysiec in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, is one of the oldest monastic complexes in Poland, with origins going back to the 11th century. For centuries it was run by Benedictines; today it is cared for by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
The centrepiece is the Basilica of the Holy Trinity with its Neoclassical interior and the Oleśnicki Chapel. The Gothic cloister, fragments of Romanesque walls and the Baroque monastery gate have survived. From the summit you look out over the Fir Forest, while the slopes of Łysiec are covered by vast boulder fields.
A marked trail from Nowa Słupia, known as the Royal Road, leads up to Święty Krzyż, and a road approaches from Huta Szklana. You can visit on your own or with a guide booked in advance. The climb calls for comfortable footwear.
