The Basilica of St Louis the King and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in a western district of Katowice, beside the Franciscan monastery complex. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it took Neo-Romanesque forms, and its tower is visible from afar above the roofs of Panewniki.
The interior is decorated with historic stained glass, a double-sided altar with a ciborium and the side altars of Our Lady of Sorrows and St Anthony of Padua. In front of the church stands a monument to St Hedwig of Silesia, patron of the region and of the Panewniki Franciscans. The adjoining monastery is still home to the friars.
Beside the basilica lies a calvary with Stations of the Cross chapels and the Lourdes Grotto, the oldest structure of the complex. The busiest time is Christmas, when a huge nativity scene, arranged differently every year, is set up inside.
