plac Klasztorny 1, Wieś Lubiąż
The former Cistercian abbey in Lubiąż on the Oder, in Wołów county, is considered the largest monastic complex in the world and a masterpiece of Silesian Baroque. Its façade runs for more than 200 metres. The Cistercians were brought here in the 12th century by Bolesław the Tall, taking over a site left earlier by Benedictines.
The complex includes the Gothic basilica of the Assumption, the abbot's palace, the monastic wings, the auxiliary church of St. James and farm buildings. The most representative interiors are open to visitors: the Ducal Hall of about 400 square metres, the summer refectory, the abbot's dining room and the church. Beneath the church are crypts with tombs of the Silesian Piasts and the remains of monks.
After secularisation in the 19th century and post-war devastation the site fell into ruin for decades. Today it is cared for by the Lubiąż Foundation, which carries out a laborious restoration; some interiors still await repair and remain raw. Concerts, exhibitions and festivals are held in the courtyards.
