The Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Bartholomew in Piekary Śląskie, commonly known as the Piekary Basilica, is the heart of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Justice and Social Love. The imposing church towers above the town and remains one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Upper Silesia.
The interior is richly decorated, and its focal point is the image of Our Lady of Piekary, venerated since the 17th century, when the painting was said to give off a scent of roses. Guided tours come in several versions, from a short walk through the church to a tour of the whole complex lasting a few hours. Slots must be booked in advance, individual visitors included.
A pilgrimage centre operates next to the basilica, and nearby stretches the extensive Piekary Calvary with chapels scattered across the hill, along with Rajski Plac, which gathers the faithful during major celebrations. John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta both visited the church.
