St James's Church stands at the corner of the New Town Market Square in Toruń and served for centuries as the parish church of the New Town. The Gothic building was raised between the early 14th and the mid-15th century, and in 2021 it was granted the rank of a sanctuary.
The church has a basilica layout with three aisles, rare in this part of Poland. Inside, medieval wall paintings have survived, together with a 14th-century mystic crucifix and a figure of the Virgin and Child. The chancel draws attention with its painted tracery decoration and the carefully composed brick architectural details of the elevations.
A scallop shell sign at the entrance marks the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, which passed through Toruń. Tradition also links the church with a lost 14th-century organ, considered one of the oldest in the country. The building lies within the old town listed by UNESCO, a few minutes' walk from the Old Town Market Square.
