The Gothic cathedral basilica of the two St Johns stands in the heart of Toruń's old town, listed by UNESCO. The three-aisled hall, over 27 metres high and topped by a massive tower, was built in stages from the 13th century and ranks among the finest monuments of the Chełmno Land.
Inside, Gothic wall paintings have survived along with numerous epitaphs and works of art from later centuries. The tower holds Tuba Dei, the largest medieval bell in Poland. Beside a font dating from Copernicus's day are an epitaph and an 18th-century monument dedicated to the astronomer.
For an extra fee you can climb the tower — more than two hundred steps lead up, and the view takes in the bend of the Vistula and the roofs of the old town. A 3D film about the history of the church is shown in the tower cinema.
