The ruins rise on Mariemont hill in Zagórz near Sanok, where several valleys meet. The Discalced Carmelite complex was founded in 1714 and combined monastic life with defence from the start — walls and bastions surrounded it, and it formed part of the borderland fortification system.
After a fire the church was never rebuilt, despite two attempts. The walls of the church and the monastic buildings have survived and are adapted for visitors: a route has been marked out, boards describe the history of the place and the garden has been tidied up. An obelisk with a figure of the Virgin and Child stands in front of the church.
From the viewing tower a panorama opens over Zagórz, the Góry Słonne range and the edge of the Low Beskids. The Forresterium Culture Centre presents the monastery's past, partly through an augmented reality show. It makes a good stop on the way into the Bieszczady.
