ul. Krzeptówki 14, Zakopane
The sanctuary in the Krzeptówki district of Zakopane was raised as a votive offering of thanks for John Paul II surviving the assassination attempt of 1981. It is run by the Pallottine fathers and is also called the Polish Fatima or the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima.
The church was built between 1987 and 1992 and consecrated in 1997 by John Paul II during his pilgrimage to Poland. Besides the church, the grounds include an older chapel from the 1950s, the Fatima Park and a statue of the pope where pilgrims gather. Relics are kept inside, among them a relic of the Holy Cross.
Pilgrim traffic is heavy — over a million people come each year, most of them on Marian feast days and dates linked with the Fatima apparitions. The sanctuary lies a few kilometres from the centre of Zakopane, on the road towards Kościelisko.
