The Golgotha in Licheń stands at the centre of the largest sanctuary complex in Poland, right next to the Licheń basilica. It is an artificial mound raised from stone, about 25 metres high and visible from almost every point of the grounds.
Its slopes hold a maze of paths, grottoes and shrines with sculptures showing successive scenes of the Passion; they were made by the artist Olga Bajkowska. At the top stands a cross with figures of the Virgin Mary and St John, and the platform opens a view over the basilica and the surrounding park. The climb takes a good quarter of an hour at a calm pace.
The construction was initiated by Father Eugeniusz Makulski as an act of atonement for the desecration of the sanctuary during the Second World War. Besides local stone, blocks brought from holy places were used, among them Mount Tabor and the Mount of Olives. The paths are steep and rocky, so sturdy shoes are advisable.
