Jaszczurówka 38, Zakopane
The chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands at Jaszczurówka, on the eastern edge of Zakopane, close to the thermal springs. It was built in 1906 to a design by Stanisław Witkiewicz, the creator of the Zakopane style, which is why it is commonly called the Witkiewicz chapel.
The wooden body on a stone base combines highland ornament with solutions borrowed from manor houses: arcaded porches, carved details and a steep roof are its hallmarks. The interior stays simple. The main altar resembles a highland cottage with a relief of the Sacred Heart, and the windows hold stained glass with Our Lady of Częstochowa and Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn.
The building lies within Tatra National Park, which supervises it, while pastoral care rests with the Marian Fathers. The chapel is small, a visit takes only a moment and fits well into a trip along the Oswald Balzer road towards Morskie Oko.
