The monastery in Rzeszów consists of the late Renaissance church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the 18th-century buildings of the Bernardine friars. The complex now stands in the very centre of the city, on Sokoła Street, a few minutes' walk from the market square.
The site goes back to the 16th century and a small chapel around which the cult of Our Lady of Rzeszów developed. The church and monastery were founded by Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza, then owner of Rzeszów. Built on the edge of the town of the day, they were incorporated into its defensive system and originally had a fortified character, of which little survives.
Inside the church are a 15th-century figure of the Virgin Mary, the late Renaissance high altar and the marble and alabaster altar of the Holy Cross from the 17th century. The historic organ and the wooden music gallery also deserve attention. The monastery itself is enclosed and cannot be visited; the Bernardine Gardens lie next to it.
