ul. Kościeliska, Zakopane
The old church, dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa, stands on Kościeliska street, one of the oldest streets in Zakopane. Founded in 1847 by the owner of the Zakopane estate, it is regarded as the oldest wooden church in the Tatras; locals simply call it the old little church.
The church was raised in log construction, covered with shingles and crowned with a small turret. Simplicity rules inside: the main and side altars come from the second half of the 19th century, and the painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa from the 1930s. Folk paintings and figures of saints catch the eye, as does the eight-stop organ from 1957.
The church belongs to the Holy Family parish and lies on the Wooden Architecture Route in Lesser Poland. Next to it stretches the historic Pęksowy Brzyzek, a cemetery with the graves of people of merit for Zakopane. Every second Sunday Orthodox services are held here.
