The Archcathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka stands in the southern part of Piotrkowska Street, in the very centre of Łódź. Built of distinctive yellow facing brick, the neo-Gothic church rises above the surrounding tenements and remains the tallest structure in the city and one of the tallest churches in Poland. Its architects took Ulm Minster as their model.
Records of a church on this site go back to the Middle Ages, and for a long time it was the only place of worship in the growing settlement. The present building was raised in the early twentieth century, when industrial Łódź needed a representative church. During the German occupation the interior served as a military store and mushrooms were grown in the crypt.
Inside there are richly decorated altars, stained glass and commemorative plaques. The organs draw attention: a large 58-stop instrument in the choir loft and a smaller 10-stop one in the side choir. A technical curiosity is the reinforced concrete vault and tower top, rare at the time of construction.
