Pruchna, Wieś Pruchna
The penitential cross in Pruchna is a small sandstone monolith standing by the road in this village of the Cieszyn region. Such crosses were once set up by killers who, under a settlement, had to carve and place them with their own hands and at their own expense, usually at the scene of the crime. This is the only monument of its kind in Cieszyn Silesia.
The stone bears an inscription in Old Czech commemorating the son of Jan Czerwenka, a burgher of Cieszyn, murdered on this spot in the middle of the seventeenth century by reckless companions. The text closes with a plea for mercy on the victim's soul, a formula typical of penitential monuments.
The cross no longer stands exactly where the crime happened: it was moved from a ditch along the old Katowice road. Viewing it takes only a few minutes, so the stop is best combined with a trip around Cieszyn Silesia, towards Cieszyn, Skoczów or the Vistula valley.
