ul. Spichrzowa, Grudziądz
The granaries of Grudziądz form a compact group of twenty-six buildings on Spichrzowa Street, set along the scarp of the high Vistula bank. Seen from the river they look like a mighty defensive wall; from the town side they are modest houses of one or two storeys. This double silhouette is the most recognisable view of Grudziądz.
The complex goes back to the middle of the fourteenth century, when grain stores also served as town fortifications. The oldest surviving buildings bear the numbers 9 and 11. In the lower storeys of some of them remains of Gothic walls with the characteristic Wendish bond are still visible. The ensemble has been declared a historic monument.
The facades of granaries 13 and 15 still hold wooden chutes used to pour grain straight onto ships. Some buildings now house exhibitions of the Grudziądz Museum and the FLIS Museum of Vistula Trade. The best view of the whole frontage is from the opposite bank of the river.
