Bulwar Wołyński, Kraków
The sightseeing balloon lifts off from Bulwar Wołyński on the bank of the Vistula, close to Wawel Hill. It is a tethered design: instead of a free flight it makes a vertical ascent, with a steel cable holding it above the launch site. A standard ride reaches about 150 metres, and the maximum range is as much as 275 metres. Up to thirty passengers board the gondola together with the pilot.
From the air the layout of old Cracow reads like a map: Wawel Hill, the bend of the Vistula, the rooftops of Kazimierz and Podgórze, and beyond them the towers of the Old Town and the green ring of the Planty gardens. In clear weather the horizon is closed by the burial mounds and the Carpathian Foothills. The ascent is short, but offers a perspective no terrace in the city can match.
Ascents depend entirely on the weather — they are suspended in strong wind or storms, so it is worth checking the current announcement before setting off. The balloon operates all year round and all week long, and in season also after dark, when the city is illuminated.
