The Imperial Shipyard occupies a site on the Martwa Wisła (Dead Vistula), north of Danzig's Main Town and within walking distance of the central station. Founded at the end of the nineteenth century as a state enterprise, for decades it ranked among the most modern shipyards in Germany, building mainly warships. After 1945 it became part of the Gdańsk Shipyard.
Brick halls, workshops and quays with cranes have survived — an ensemble of industrial architecture rarely preserved on such a scale. Some buildings have been revitalised and now house offices, studios, restaurants and exhibition spaces; the grounds are open and can be explored on your own. The site's website also offers a virtual walk through areas not normally accessible.
The shipyard adjoins Solidarity Square, the European Solidarity Centre and the historic Gate No. 2, so a visit is easily combined with the story of August 1980. From here it is also a short way to Ołowianka island and the Motława river.
