The Papal Window is a window on the first floor of the Bishops' Palace at 3 Franciszkańska Street in Cracow, close to Wawel Hill. The classicist building has served for centuries as the residence of the bishops of Cracow, and the window itself has become one of the most recognisable spots in the city.
It was from this window that John Paul II greeted the crowds gathering in the street during his pilgrimages to Poland, held impromptu conversations and joked with young people. Those evening meetings often lasted late into the night and became part of the country's collective memory. Benedict XVI and Francis later continued the custom of speaking from the window.
Since 2018 the window has been replaced by a mosaic portrait of the Polish pope designed by Magdalena Czerska. Candles are lit below it, especially on anniversaries connected with the pontificate. The site is viewed from the street, a visit takes a quarter of an hour and fits well into a walk around the Old Town.
