ul. Sławkowska, Olkusz
The Kościuszko Mound is an earthen mound about seven metres high, raised on Sławkowska Street in Olkusz and topped with a six-metre oak cross. Despite its modest size it stands out in the town panorama and remains one of its recognisable symbols. At its foot lies a stone with a plaque describing the history of the place.
The mound was raised by the townspeople in 1861, on the 44th anniversary of Tadeusz Kościuszko's death; the anniversary was not a round one, but the mood before the January Uprising favoured such a demonstration. The first wheelbarrow of earth was brought by the local parish priest Józef Ćwikliński. Already in 1863, on the order of a Russian commander, the cross was torn down and the mound levelled. It was rebuilt in 1917, on the centenary of the leader's death, and in 1972 the decayed cross was replaced.
This is a short stop while sightseeing in Olkusz, easy to combine with the old town and the market square. The Olkusz structure is a smaller echo of the famous Kraków mound.
