Poznańska 20, Sulmierzyce
The post mill known as Jakub stands at the northern edge of Sulmierzyce, at the junction of Poznańska and Ceglarska streets. It was built in 1795, as recorded by a date carved on a beam, and thoroughly renovated in 1891. It is the only survivor of the many windmills that once worked around the town.
The post mill is the oldest windmill type in Poland: the entire wooden body turns on a vertical post and is set into the wind with a tail beam. The structure rests on a low circular mound in the middle of a square mill yard. Restoration work carried out in 2007 and 2009 returned the building and its sails to their former shape.
The last private owner of the mill was Roman Gendziorowski; today it belongs to the town. Viewing it from the outside takes a quarter of an hour and makes a convenient stop on a drive across southern Wielkopolska. Sulmierzyce is also worth visiting for its wooden town hall, one of very few in the country.
