Wodna 2a, Wieś Santok
The Santok Stronghold Museum works where the Noteć flows into the Warta, at the site of an old river crossing on the trade route from Poznań to Szczecin and on to Wolin. It has two parts: a building with an archaeological display by the crossing and a stronghold reserve on the opposite bank. Santok used to be called the key and the guardian of the Polish kingdom.
The exhibition presents finds from excavations: pottery, everyday objects and weaponry from the early Middle Ages. After the visit you can cross to the left bank of the Warta by ferry or boat, where the ramparts of the former stronghold have survived. The stronghold was circular, about two hundred metres across.
The site was surrounded by an earth-and-timber rampart, a moat and the waters of the Warta and the Noteć; excavation work was resumed there in the 1990s. The terrain is flat and open, clearly visible from the flood embankments. It is best to plan the visit in fine weather, as part of the attraction lies in the open air.
