ul. Zelejowa, Chęciny
Góra Zelejowa is a nature reserve close to Chęciny covering a limestone massif rising to about 360 metres above sea level. Protection covers both the landform and the rare plant and animal species tied to the thermophilous grasslands that cover the ridge.
The slopes of Zelejowa are the source of the Zelejowa rosette limestone - one of the most valuable varieties of decorative limestone used in Polish architecture. Two quarries and several smaller diggings survive within the reserve, along with striking surface karst forms: rock towers, ribs and deep fissures.
The longest ridge in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains runs through the reserve, followed by a red hiking trail and a path of the Świętokrzyski Archaeo-Geological Trail. Along the way you pass several viewpoints over the Chęciny area. The route is stony and calls for sturdy footwear.
