The Lime Tree of the Seven Brothers grows on Władysława Jagiełły Street in Choszczno and is the town's best-known tree. Experts estimate its age at over three hundred years, and it reaches 22 metres in height. Until 2008 the lime had two fused trunks with circumferences of 460 and 760 centimetres; after an arson attack only the thinner one survived, and it still puts out leaves.
The name refers to the legend of the founding of Choszczno: the town was said to be established by Choszcz, who planted the tree together with one of his six brothers as a sign of concord and prosperity for the inhabitants. A second story calls it Czarniecki's lime and claims that hetman Stefan Czarniecki rested under its crown during the Swedish Deluge. The first version is more popular in town.
Looking at the tree takes a few minutes, but it is worth combining with a walk around Choszczno — fragments of the medieval defensive walls and a Gothic church have survived here. The lime stands in public space, accessible at any time of year.
