Wieś Zabieżki
The Czarci Dół reserve lies by the village of Zabieżki in the Otwock district, within the Mazovian Landscape Park, close to the Warsaw conurbation. Protection covers a raised bog together with the surrounding bog and wet coniferous forests. This habitat is now rare in Mazovia, preserved in only a few places east of the capital.
The central part of the reserve is taken up by quaking mires and small peat pools with dark, almost black water. Dwarf pines grow at the edge of the bog, low and twisted despite their age, a result of the poor, acidic ground. The undergrowth consists of peat mosses, heather and bilberry, typical of such habitats.
A blue hiking trail crosses the reserve and it is the only route open to visitors. Leaving the marked path is forbidden and the boggy ground can be dangerous. The name refers to the nearby wilderness site of Czarci Dół, linked with a local legend; it lies a few kilometres from the reserve boundary.
