Wieś Nowiny (gmina Susiec)
Nowiny Quarry lies on the south-eastern slope of Krzyżowa Góra, near the village of Nowiny in the Susiec commune, amid pine forest in the Roztocze region. The pit has long been out of use but has kept its clear shape: the exposed wall is about 200 metres long and over a dozen metres high. Miocene limestone was extracted here, used mainly in construction.
The exposed rock layers record a time when the Roztocze area was covered by a warm, shallow sea. The limestone contains numerous fossils of former marine organisms, visible directly on the surface of the wall. This makes the quarry one of the more popular sites in the region for field classes in geology and natural science.
A wooden viewing platform stands on the upper rim of the pit, offering a panorama of the Solska Forest stretching to the horizon. The red hiking Szlak Krawędziowy (Escarpment Trail) leads to the quarry; drivers leave their car in the roadside car park and walk the final stretch.
