ul. Cysterek, Wieś Owińska
The “Bartek” oak grows in Owińska near Poznań, on Cysterek Street, next to the walls of the former Cistercian nunnery. It is one of the mightiest oaks in Greater Poland: the trunk measures roughly 770 cm in circumference and the tree is estimated to be almost six centuries old. It is protected as a natural monument.
Tradition links the planting of the oak with King Władysław Jagiełło — the tree was said to commemorate the christening of Lithuania and the victory at Grunwald, and to have taken its name from the knight entrusted with the task. Written sources do not confirm this, but the story has become part of the place, as has the mention of Napoleon's visit to the local monastery.
The tree stands in open ground beside the post-monastic buildings, so seeing it takes a quarter of an hour. Combine the visit with a walk around Owińska: the Cistercian complex, the church and the adjacent park. The Warta valley and the trails of the Zielonka Forest are close by.
